Chris F's work
For social networking in my classroom, I have students entering all year long, as my class in open entry/open exit. I make sure to introduce the new student to everyone. I also try to introduce students to each other who are at appoximately the same place in my course. Towards the end of the course, I try to encourage students to hook up with study buddies to prepare for the certification test they have to take. I invite former graduates to come and speak with students and answer questions. I arrange for speakers to come in and speak with the students. Two weeks ago, many of my students and I went to see the Anatomy in Motion exhibit together. At least once a year, I arrange for alumni and current students to meet for breakfast at a Country Buffet. It is an opportunity for students to meet with grads and ask questions about jobs and tests, etc., in addition to getting to know one another. Even though my class is an online class, my students are required to attend at least once a week for 2 hours. During that time, I encourage conversation about anything medical in the news (like - how about that woman who just had octoplets and it turns out she already had SIX kids at home, is unmarried and lives with her parents!!!!!!); how to stay disciplined when working online at home, fitting in schoolwork around jobs, kids, life; setting up home offices to work at home, etc.
